Sans titre, 2008
Hugues Reip Was born in Cannes in 1964 and he lives and works in Paris, where he teaches at the l'École Nationale d?Architecture de La Villette. Beginning with his sculptures in the 1990s, made on a shoestring, his oeuvre incorporated a material lightness, which participates in its disruption of reality. Reip?s DIY prose is rooted in science fiction and his vision of nature enters the realm of the fantastic. Phosphorescent flowers, oversized pebbles, a lenticular cosmos, regressive creatures from the abyss people his drawing, installations and animated films inspired by Mélies? proto-cinema. Playing on scale and light (Shadow Play), abstract shapes form characters. He has created several works together with Michel Blazy. Hugues Reip?s work has been exhibited both in France (Chapelle du Genêteil in Chateau-Gonthier in 2014) and abroad (Tokyo/New York). His work features in the collections of the MAC/VAL in Vitry-sur-Seine and various FRAC across France.
