Frau mit Schlange, 1989-2005
Born in Austria in 1940, VALIE EXPORT lives and works between Cologne (Germany) and Vienna. His early films aimed to make the spectator play an active role, when asked to take aim at the screen with a ball (Ping Pong). She also used her body as a medium from a feminist perspective. In 1969, Action Pants: Genital Panik had a profound effect on the world of performance art. The artist invaded a pornographic cinema, carrying a machine gun and wearing a pair of leather trousers cut away at the crutch thus offering the spectators a view of “the real thing” by putting her genitals on display. Her oeuvre (drawings, experimental or fictional films, writing, photography, performance) can be seen in many French and international institutions including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Tate Modern in London, the MoMA in New York, the MoCA in Los Angeles or the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid. Her work has been exhibited at the Venice and Moscow Biennales as well as the Documenta in Kassel.
