Michel Quarez

The painter and poster-maker Michel Quarez was born in Damascus and lives and works in Saint-Denis (France). He studied fine art in Bordeaux and decorative arts in Paris, spent time in Warsaw (in the studio of the graphic artist Henryk Tomaszewsky) and New York, worked in an advertising agency and a comic book publishing house and began to do illustration and create posters in 1980. He was awarded numerous prizes and his posters for different events ? the Fête de l?Humanité (1985), the Fête de la Musique (1994), Paris-Plage (2010) ? and towns ? Saint-Denis, Bobigny ? are striking in their formal synthesis - human signposts, an excess of vivid colours, the insolence of fluorescent colours. Michel Quarez enjoyed retrospective exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (2006), the Forney Library in Paris (2010) and the Saint-Denis Museum (2014). The Sémiose Gallery exhibited a selection of his paintings in 2013.
