My Mirage, 1991
Jim Shaw was born in 1952 in Midland (USA) and lives and works in Los Angeles. In 1975, he and his acolyte Mike Kelley (with whom he formed the proto-punk group Destroy All Monsters) left Detroit to study at the CalArts School in Los Angeles. From that moment onwards he began to depict the belly of America in his multifaceted oeuvre, recycling the aesthetics of comics and album covers. He exhibited ?yard-sale? paintings, drew his dreams and in his series My Mirage, he mocks the psychedelic and sectarian meanderings of Billy, a 60s adolescent. He even invented a religion: Oism. In 2010, the CAPC in Bordeaux exhibited a monumental theatre décor Left Behind examining fundamentalism and neo-liberal conservatism. His work will be exhibited at the Massachusetts MOCA in 2015 and can be found in American and European public collections.
