(EVERY BUILDING ON) THE SUNSET STRIP - Ed Ruscha

Ed Ruscha

This painter, engraver, graphic artist and photographer was born in Omaha (USA) in 1937 and lives and works in Los Angeles. He studied at the Chouinard Institute in Los Angeles before publishing his first photo-books. His subjects were quite banal - service stations in 1963 followed by views taken from a helicopter of palm trees and parking lots ? with a detached atmosphere, with neither style nor great quality. Ed Ruscha explores a-subjectivity and a-sentimentality in reaction to abstract expressionism. His paintings of typographically represented words on neutral backgrounds saw him associated with pop art. His ?service station? motif appears once again in his later work, but this time in flames. Ed Ruscha represented the USA at the Venice Biennial in 2005. His last retrospective in France was at the Jeu de Paume (Paris-2006). His work can be found in major museums in the USA and Europe. He was recently exhibited at the Getty Museum in New York (2014) and the LACMA in Los Angeles (2012).
