Element Rage, 1979
Martine Aballéa was born in New York in 1950 and currently lives and works in Paris. In 1999, during her exhibition at the Musée d?Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the spectators were able to take a room in her ?Hotel Passager? (during the daytime) or in 2012, could lose themselves in her ?Maison Sans Fin? at the CRAC Languedoc-Roussillon, with its doors opening onto emptiness. Her exhibitions are invitations to explore mental spaces. Her works ? art books, photographs coloured using ink and watercolour, installations ? involving the super-imposition of text and image. Thus the woman who always dreamed of being a writer is able to create ghostly fiction, phosphorescent paradise lost, where admissions of half-forgiven crimes of passion, joy and sorrow can be discerned. Her oeuvre is sentimental, caustic and playful and forms part of the collections (amongst others) of the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Pompidou Centre in Paris.
