Sébastien Gouju

Born in 1978, Sébastien Gouju lives and works in Paris. He uses sculpture and drawing to manipulate our visual environment, rescuing it from the conformity of common appeal. The materials he uses lend a feeling of weightiness to superficial consumerism: a deflated ball made of steel, an earthenware kebab, a pack of cards made of painted stainless steel cut-outs; a figure of Christ about to make a swan-dive; his domestique enamelled pottery showing the savagery of an owl or slimy slugs devouring a leaf. Craftwork playing at art: a collision between handmade and serial manufacture with his industrial embroidery or his "collages" of printed images copied in gouache.

Sébastien Gouju's work features in the artotheque collections in Pessac, Caen and Auxerre (France) or well as in the Champagne-Ardennes FRAC. He enjoyed solo exhibitions in 2007, 2010, 2014 and 2016 at the Semiose Gallery in Paris.
